I can’t stand it when city folk out simplify me. My move to the suburbs, although drastically reducing the amount of fuel we use to commute to school, work and shopping, has made my life feel so hectic and removed from nature that I might as well have moved to the city. But in the city maybe I would live across the street from a community garden and transform my basement into a root cellar. Then again, this being Florida, I don’t think there are many basements.
But if you would like to read more about one New York couple who actually did the root cellar conversion, just follow this link to read about The Return of the Root Cellar. And be prepared to be shamed. These people are serious food preservationists, storing potatoes beneath the staircase and squash in knotted pantyhose.
